An old piano is one of the hardest things to get rid of. It is too heavy to move yourself, councils will not take it in a kerbside clean-up, and the tip will not accept it as ordinary household waste. Most people find this out only after the piano has already been declared unwanted.
Weight is the reason. Even a modest upright starts around 220 kg, and a pianola commonly passes 400 kg. Many unwanted pianos are also oversized instruments built decades ago, when cases were larger and frames heavier than anything made today.

Before disposing of a piano, it is worth knowing whether it can be saved. A piano that has not been tuned in twenty years, has been stored in a garage, or has cracked bridges or a split soundboard is usually beyond economic repair — restoration costs more than a serviceable second-hand instrument. Old pianolas in particular have very little resale value, however impressive they look.
Schools, churches and community halls are the usual first thought, but most now decline donated pianos: they already have one, or they know what tuning and moving an old instrument will cost them. It is worth asking, but worth having a plan when the answer is no.
When disposal is the answer, the piano is dismantled rather than dumped. A piano is largely recyclable material: the cast iron frame alone weighs around 100 kg and goes to scrap metal, the strings are high-tensile steel wire, and the case, soundboard and action are timber, felt and wool. What is left as landfill is a small fraction of what came out of the house.
One thing to check before selling or giving a piano away: pianos built before the mid-1970s may have ivory key tops, which are subject to trade restrictions in Australia. It does not prevent disposal, but it can affect whether the instrument may legally be sold.
Getting the piano out is still a piano removal, with all the same risks. Factors such as internal and external steps, staircase width and turns, hallway and doorframe widths, tight corners and driveway access all shape the plan. We ask for detailed access information before the day, so nothing is discovered with 300 kg already off the floor.
