20 Years Moving Grand Pianos
Sydney Piano Removals has over 20 years of experience moving grand pianos across Sydney and the Central Coast. Grand pianos are the most demanding instrument we handle, and they are moved by our own crews.
Our Own Crews, Tail-Lift Trucks
Our removalists are all full time direct employees of our company. Our trucks are equipped with a full size hydraulic tail lift platform, so your grand piano is never manhandled on and off a truck deck. Every truck also carries GPS tracking, so our office knows exactly where your piano is at any moment.

Dismantled, Wrapped and Reassembled
Unlike an upright, a grand piano cannot simply be wheeled out. The legs, pedal lyre and music desk are removed, the lid is closed and locked, and the body is lowered onto a padded piano skid and strapped before it leaves the room. It travels on its bass side, blanket-wrapped, and is reassembled and levelled in its new home.
Size and Weight, Measured in Advance
Size and weight drive the plan. A baby grand runs about 150 cm long and 270 kg; a concert grand reaches 275 cm and can exceed 480 kg. That weight through a doorway, a stairwell or a lift needs measuring in advance, not on the day.
All Sydney Suburbs and Beyond
We always send a team of experienced removalists and our proactive approach ensures the most time and cost efficient solution possible. We operate across Sydney and Sydney Suburbs (Central Coast, Sutherland, Wollongong, Northern Beaches, Southern Beaches, Eastern Suburbs, North Shore, North Sydney, …). If you don't see your location, please give us a call. Complete the enquiry form or call us to discuss your grand piano removal in more detail.

✔️ Best way to move your Grand Pianos

Grand Pianos Are Sized by Length
Grand pianos are sized by length, measured from the keyboard to the far end of the tail. A baby grand is roughly 150 cm, a parlour grand around 180 cm, a semi-concert grand about 215 cm, and a full concert grand up to 275 cm. Weight climbs with length, from about 270 kg to well over 480 kg.
Why a Grand Is Turned on Its Side
That length is what makes a grand difficult. The instrument is far too long to pass through a standard doorway upright or flat, so it has to be partly dismantled and turned on its side before it moves anywhere. The three legs and the pedal lyre come off, the lid is closed and locked, and the body is lowered onto a padded piano skid and strapped down. Only then does it travel.
Where General Removalists Go Wrong
Handled by inexperienced general removalists, the risks are real and expensive. The lyre and legs are the most commonly damaged parts, because they carry enormous load in a direction they were never designed for. The rim and the case corners mark easily, and a soundboard can crack from a single hard set-down. That is why, before we lay a hand on your piano, we require detailed information about access at both ends of the move.
Access Is Planned Before Moving Day
Factors such as internal and external steps, staircase width and turns, hallway and doorframe widths, lift dimensions, tight corners and driveway access all shape our removal plan. We use that information to plan the safe removal of your grand piano and to identify problems well in advance of the day, rather than discovering them with 400 kg already off the floor.
Retune After It Settles
One thing worth knowing: a grand piano should be retuned after it settles in its new home, usually two to four weeks after the move. Transport and a change of humidity both shift the tuning, however carefully the instrument is handled.

AFFORD Piano Removals is located in Sydney Inner West and we serve Sydney, Sydney Suburbs, Central Coast, Sutherland, Wollongong, Northern Beaches, Southern Beaches, Eastern Suburbs, North Shore, North Sydney and even interstate. Wherever your grand piano is going, it is in safe hands.
We have years of experience moving grand pianos out of terraces, apartments, churches and studios, safely and without damage to the instrument, your property or ourselves. Expert planning and execution are the keys to success.
Moving a grand piano without damage takes strength, the right equipment and, above all, know-how.
Stress Free Grand Piano Removals
A grand piano is both heavy and awkwardly shaped, and the two problems compound. Nearly half a tonne spread across a curved rim and three slender legs cannot be carried the way ordinary furniture is carried.
When moving your grand piano there are three things to avoid at all costs: damage to the instrument, damage to your property, and injury to anyone. Every step of our method exists to prevent one of those.
Our removalists are experts at negotiating tight corners, narrow hallways and every type of staircase.
Properly Equipped for Grand Piano Removals
AFFORD Piano Removals is one of the experienced piano removalists in Sydney. We assess your grand piano removal in advance of the removals day, and our teams carry piano skids, padded covers, ratchet straps and specialist heavy-duty tools to handle even the most difficult jobs.
Your grand piano is dismantled, wrapped, transported and reassembled using equipment designed for the job, so it arrives in the same condition it left in, and you get complete peace of mind.
