Moving Grand Pianos: Step by Step
Moving grand pianos is a different job from moving an upright. A grand cannot travel on its legs, so it is partly taken apart, turned onto its side and carried on a padded piano skid. Done properly, the piano arrives in the same condition it left.
On the Day
- The lid is secured and the piano is wrapped in heavy blankets.
- The legs and the pedal lyre are removed and packed separately.
- The body is turned onto its side and strapped to a padded skid.
- A 1-tonne wide platform hydraulic tail lift raises it into a fully enclosed, waterproof truck.
- At the new home, the legs and lyre go back on and the piano is set level in the spot you choose.
