Pianolas Moved by Our Own Crews

Sydney Piano Removals has over 20 years of experience in moving Pianos in Sydney and Central Coast. Pianolas are the heaviest instrument we move in one piece, and they are handled by our own crews.

Tail-Lift Trucks with GPS Tracking

Our removalists are all full time direct employees of our company, working in teams of fully experienced piano removalists. Our trucks are all equipped with full size hydraulic tail lift platform for safe and easy loading and unloading, so a pianola is never manhandled on and off a truck deck. Our trucks also carry GPS tracking systems, so our office knows exactly where your piano is at any moment.

What Makes a Pianola Different

A pianola is an upright piano with a pneumatic player mechanism built into the case. That mechanism — bellows, tracker bar, spool box and the tubing that connects them — adds weight where it is least welcome, high in the case and forward of the centre line. The instrument is deeper front to back than an ordinary upright and noticeably top-heavy, which changes how it must be tilted on stairs.

Upwards of 400 kg, Often a Century Old

Weight is the headline figure. Where the lightest upright is around 220 kg, an average pianola weighs upwards of 400 kg, and the larger cabinet models go beyond that. Pianolas are also mostly old instruments, so dried glue joints, perished castors and loose veneer are the rule rather than the exception. They cannot be lifted by the keybed or the music desk.

Taller, Heavier and Top-Heavy

Pianolas sit at the top of the upright range on both height and weight. Small uprights stand under 110cm, medium uprights under 127cm, and pianolas above 130cm — but the height is the least of it. The player mechanism can add 60 to 90 kg over a comparable upright, and it sits above the keybed rather than down in the base, so the whole instrument carries its mass high.

Why the Crew Size Matters

That is what makes a pianola different to move. A top-heavy instrument tilts sooner and recovers later, and 400 kg going over on a staircase cannot be caught. It is also why the number of people on the job is not a detail: a pianola needs a crew that can control it on the tilt, not just carry the weight.

A Century of Dry Summers

Age compounds the problem. Most pianolas in Sydney homes were built between 1900 and 1930, and a century of dry summers takes its toll on hide glue and veneer. Castors seize or snap off under load, case corners lift, and the spool box door and tracker bar are easily damaged if the front is used as a handhold. We secure the player mechanism and close the fallboard before the instrument moves at all.

Access Planned at Both Ends

Regardless of size, all pianos are very heavy. When moving it inside your house, slightest knock or bump can cause significant damage to the instrument, your property or removalists. If handled by in-experienced non-professional general removalists, it's just like driving a piano bull dozer through your house. That is why, before we even lay a hand on your pianola, we require detailed information regarding access points, both at pick-up and the instrument's ultimate destination.

Factors such as internal/external steps and staircases, width of hallways and doorframes, tight corners and driveways all impact our removal plan — and a pianola's extra depth means a doorway that passed an ordinary upright may not pass this one. We use this information to formulate a plan for the safe removal of your pianola, identifying and planning for any potential problems well in advance of the move.

Tuning and the Player Mechanism

One thing worth knowing: a pianola should be retuned after it settles in its new home, usually two to four weeks after the move. If the player mechanism has not been used in years, it is worth having it looked at then too — perished tubing and bellows cloth are age, not transport damage, but a move is when people notice.

When moving your pianola there are three things to avoid at all costs: damage to the instrument, damage to your property and, of course, causing injury to anyone. Every step of our method exists to prevent one of those.
