What Sets the Cost to Move a Piano? How Your Quote Is Built
Why Quotes Differ
Ring three piano removalists in Sydney and you will notice they all ask much the same questions before naming a figure. That is not a sales routine. Each answer you give adds or removes labour, equipment or truck time, and those three things are what a quote is really made of. Knowing why they ask makes the cost to move a piano far easier to understand.
How This Guide Works
This guide follows a quote from the first phone call to the final figure. It covers what the removalist needs to know about the piano, the stairs and the access at each address, how travel and dismantling change the piano moving cost, and where the extra charges that catch people out usually come from.
Accurate Details, Accurate Quote
The more accurate your details, the closer the quote will be to what you pay. An upright going from one ground-floor room to another is a very different job from a grand piano coming down a flight of stairs, and a good quote shows that difference clearly.

✔️ The Questions You Will Be Asked First
Expect the first call to start with the instrument itself. Is it an upright, a baby grand, a concert grand, a pianola or a piano organ? If you know the brand or the rough height or length, say so, because size tells the removalist how heavy it is and whether any parts will need to come off before it can travel.
Both Addresses
Next come the two addresses. The removalist wants to picture each end of the job: how many stairs there are and whether they turn, how far the truck can park from the front door, whether there is a lift, and how wide the hallways and doorways are. A photo of the path out helps.
Timing and Dates
Finally you will be asked about timing and anything extra, such as a preferred day, whether the piano needs to go into storage for a while, or whether an old instrument needs to be taken away for disposal. Each answer feeds straight into the cost to move a piano on your quote.
✔️ How Each Answer Moves the Price Up or Down
Think of the piano moving cost as a base job plus adjustments. The base is a piano going from level access straight out to a truck parked close by.
Piano Type & Size:An upright can usually be wheeled out whole on a trolley. A grand piano has its legs and lyre removed, is turned on its side and strapped to a padded skid, which takes more hands and more time on site.
Stairs & Access:Stairs are the single biggest adjustment on most quotes. The number of steps, whether the staircase turns, tight corners, narrow doorways and a long walk to the truck all add minutes, effort and equipment, and the price follows.
Distance & Travel:A move across a suburb is mostly about time on site. Once the piano is going further afield, for example to the Central Coast, the Blue Mountains, Wollongong or the Southern Highlands, travel time and road costs become a bigger part of the figure.
Dismantling, Storage & Insurance:Taking a grand apart and putting it back together is part of the job and should be listed. Storage, short or long term, is quoted separately. Check that insurance for the piano and your property is already included rather than added later.
✔️ Upright or Grand: What the Numbers on a Quote Mean
As a starting point, a standard upright moving between two Sydney homes with easy access, no real stairs and a short carry from the truck is usually quoted at around $250 to $400. That base covers the crew, padding, the trolley and the truck.
Grand Piano Starting Point
For moving a grand piano, the base rises to roughly $450 and $700 or more, because the legs and lyre come off, the body goes onto a piano skid board and the whole grand piano move takes longer.
A Floor, Not a Ceiling
Treat both ranges as the floor, not the final figure. Stairs, a long carry, limited parking or added services such as storage sit on top of them, which is why two uprights of the same size can end up with quite different quotes.
✔️ Where Surprise Extra Charges Come From
Most unexpected costs on moving day are not hidden fees at all. They appear when the job the crew finds at the door is not the job that was described on the phone. A quote can only be as accurate as the information behind it, so gaps in the details tend to turn into extra charges later.
Why a Price Changes on the DayIf the crew arrives and discovers a second flight of stairs, a parking spot three houses away or a doorway too narrow to pass without removing a door, the work has changed. More time or equipment is needed, and that shows up on the invoice.
The Usual Culprits:- Forgotten Stairs: Front steps, a split-level lounge or a few steps down to the garden are easy to overlook and often end up counted on the day.
- Longer Carry: Driveways, apartment car parks and restricted street parking can stretch the distance from the truck well beyond what was expected.
- Unmentioned Extras: A second stop, a delay in getting keys, or a late request for storage or disposal all add time that was never priced in.
Count the steps at both addresses, measure the tightest doorway, send photos of the path out and mention parking limits before you book. Ask the removalist to confirm in writing what the quote includes, so you know that the figure you agreed on is the figure you pay.
✔️ What a Complete Quote Should Include
Price is only half of what you compare between piano removalists. A cheaper quote that leaves out insurance, sends a smaller crew or relies on subcontractors can cost more in the end. Before accepting any figure, check it against the points below. At Sydney Piano Removals we have been moving pianos around Sydney for more than 20 years, and every quote we give is built to cover them.
What to look for before you say yes: A Full Crew:We always send a team of three of our own full-time employees, never subcontractors, whether the job is an upright or a concert grand.
The Right Truck & Gear:Our trucks have a 1-tonne wide platform hydraulic tail lift and a fully enclosed waterproof body, and we bring trolleys, dollies, padded piano skids, heavy-duty blankets and ratchet straps.
A Clear, Free Quote:Quotes are free and based on the details you give us, including stairs and access, so the price is agreed before any work starts.
Insurance Already Included:Our quote includes insurance covering damage to the piano and to your property, both during the removal and while in transit.
If a quote you have been given does not cover these points, ask why before you book. It is the simplest way to avoid a surprise once the piano is on the move.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: What details do I need to get an accurate piano moving quote?
A: Tell the removalist the type of piano (upright, baby grand, grand, pianola or organ), both addresses, the number of stairs at each end, how close the truck can park and any tight doorways or corners. Photos of the route out help a lot.
Q: Why is a grand piano quoted higher than an upright?
A: A grand piano has its legs and lyre removed and is strapped on its side to a padded skid before it can be moved, then reassembled at the new home. That extra handling takes more time and care than wheeling an upright out on a trolley.
Q: How do stairs change the cost to move a piano?
A: Stairs add labour, time and equipment, and turns or tight landings add more again. Movers commonly add around $50 to $200 or more for stairs and difficult access, so count every step at both addresses when you ask for a quote.
Q: Can the price change after I accept the quote?
A: Only if the job is different from what was described, such as extra stairs, a longer carry or an added stop. Give full details up front and get the quote confirmed in writing to keep the price where it was agreed.
✔️ Getting a Quote You Can Rely On
The cost to move a piano in Sydney is not a mystery figure. It is the base job for your type of piano, with adjustments for stairs, access, distance, dismantling and any storage you need. The clearer your answers are, the fewer surprises there will be on the day.
Compare Line by Line
Compare quotes line by line, not on the total alone. Make sure each one covers a full crew, proper equipment and insurance for the piano and your home, and that the stairs and access at both addresses have been counted. That is how you end up paying the price you were quoted.
